In 1874 the Semiahmoo road opened establishing Elgin’s position as a stage stop and a hotel was built to provide rest for those on the road. Within the hotel there was a small country store and post office to serve the residents, but although the hotel was a success it diminished due to the opening of the New Westminster Southern railway in 1891.
By 1886 Elgin had been declared as Canada’s customs entry port, which meant that all traffic from the Nicomekl River and the Semiahmoo Road were supposed to report. Soon there were two more ports built within the area. The ports of White Rock and Douglas caused the success of the Elgin Port to fade.
Elgin was now home to a hotel with a barn and blacksmith, a local school, a community hall, a sawmill, and a Port of customs.

The Elgin neighbourhood is a place of history in the South Surrey region. In 1874, Semiahmoo Road was opened mainly for travel between Blaine and New Westminster. Elgin is a mature area of South Surrey that is heavily wooded in areas and contains some of South Surrey’s largest estate lots. You can find a variety of housing options in the Elgin neighbourhood, ranging from private park like acreage lots with custom built mansions of all years, to the suburban half acre (GD) lots in Chantrell Park that was developed in the 1990s through the early 2000s.
There is no lack of parks and trails in the Elgin area if you aren’t taking advantage of the short trip to Crescent Beach or White Rock. Some of the most popular parks, many of which have groomed trails and spectacular bird watching in the area are Elgin Heritage Park, Victoria Memorial Park, Sunnyside Acres Urban Forest Park, Chantrell Creek Park and Crescent Park. There is also the South Surrey Athletic Park within close proximity, which is South Surrey’s destination for athletics and active recreation. It offers facilities for soccer, football, rugby, baseball, tennis and volleyball. There is a variety of pathways and walking loops for leisure walking or jogging, a bike park, waterpark, playground and picnic shelters. You can also find venues for indoor sports in the South Surrey Recreation Center and at the South Surrey Arena.
